Has technology ruined the video game tie-in for movies? I loved them as a kid.

When a hit comes out of nowhere, there's no time to develop a video game before the film falls into obscurity and a video game seems out of place. No one is going to base a toy or video game on something unknown. We get homogenized variations of existing films and they don't even guarantee success anymore. That seems to limit the creativity of the whole project and any tie-in assets. Hollywood has long been on a course of remaking and rebooting known films that previously achieved success. Even so, this meandering excuse for a plot doesn't inspire play. Without Toys R Us, there isn't much a a retail discovery process for movie tie-in toys. Thus, what's the point?Įven the toy industry loses out with movies like this. Aquaman couldn't become a video game unless someone chose to license the IP and concoct some semblance of a story - likely having nothing to do with the original. Didn't happen.īlockbusters used to usher in video game tie-ins that let you play as the lead character and wreak havoc. It was reminiscent of the made-for-TV Power Ranger movies, being little more than random footage assembled, hoping for the best.

It had a minimal plot and was rife with tangents leading nowhere. Movies like this usually suck and Aquaman exemplified that for me. When they look too good to actually be good - run away. I've come to expect little from big-budget films that coast into theaters behind deftly edited trailers. I hoped Aquaman's visual effects would at least win me over, but this was devoid of plot, thought, and effort.
